Bed and Breakfast in Tain Scotland

Our Area

The Royal Burgh of Tain was granted its charter in 1066 by Malcolm III, making it the oldest Royal Burgh of Scotland. This made it a sanctuary and something of a tax haven!

Tain's Gaelic name is Baile Dubhthaich, Duthac's Town. This important Christian figure was said to have been born here in the 8thC AD. He became a saint in 1419.

Tain became so famous as a sanctuary that Robert the Bruce sent his family here in 1306 to keep them safe from the English.

During World War Two, many RAF and Army personnel were stationed in the area. Complete and semi derelict military structures can be seen locally, especially at the old airfield sites of Tain and Evanton.

EXPLORING TAIN

There are many interesting and unusual buildings to be found, many of which were constructed by the Maitland family of architects in the late 19th C. These buildings have a distinctive appearance and can be spotted all over Tain, including the Town Hall, The Royal Hotel, the parish church and the museum. There are also many lovely forest walks just outside of the town centre.
